Liquid-filled pressure gauges have their internal mechanisms submerged in glycerin. The fill provides several advantages: it protects the internals from corrosion, dampens the effect of fluid and line pulsation so the pointer is easier to read accurately, and lubricates the movement (gears and cogs) so it continues to operate smoothly. Silicone can be substituted as the fill liquid when an application is sensitive to possible glycerin contamination in the event of catastrophic gauge failure.
Most liquid-filled gauges can also be supplied dry, allowing the customer to fill them with their preferred liquid or to use them without fill. The primary design difference between liquid-fillable gauges and inexpensive utility-style gauges is the way the case is sealed, together with the liquid-fill capability itself.
It should not be assumed that a liquid-filled gauge is automatically more accurate simply because it is fillable. In general, as the complexity of the gauge design increases, so does the potential for improved internal components and accuracy. We also offer highly accurate dry (non-fillable) gauges for applications in which a liquid fill is undesirable. A clear description of your application requirements enables us to select the most appropriate gauge.
