Model BS55 (clamp closure) and BS65 (bolted closure) simplex basket strainers are available in 2" to 20" sizes. Both models include adjustable mounting feet and a drain plug. Cv values range from 45 (2") to 10,900 (20"), supporting low pressure drop in high-flow systems such as water treatment and oil pipelines. Large straining capacity (up to 6 times the connecting pipe area) reduces cleaning frequency, labor and downtime. Options include 304SS, 316SS and Monel baskets for corrosive service. Typical applications include chemical processing, marine and food/beverage systems where pumps and valves must be protected from debris.
Comparing strainers solely by connection size is a common mistake. Pricing and lead time matter, but the flow coefficient (Cv) should also be evaluated from a performance standpoint.
A higher Cv produces a lower clean differential pressure for a given flow rate and can extend the interval between basket cleanings. The importance of this difference depends on the application—batch operations that clean before every run may be less sensitive, while continuous processes can see meaningful reductions in labor, personnel exposure, process interruption and flow restriction. Higher-Cv designs also support greater flow rates at a given differential pressure, which is especially relevant with centrifugal pumps.

In the smaller sizes, Eaton models generally offer higher Cv values. Keckley GFV performs best in the 12"–16" range. The practical significance of these differences depends on flow rate, particulate loading, pump type and desired cleaning frequency. At the 4" size the values are close, so the decision often reduces to cover style (quick-opening versus bolted), cost and lead time.
